The challenge
BE was winning business almost entirely through referrals. That works until it doesn't — referral flow is not something you can forecast, budget against, or turn up when a quarter looks thin, and it leaves a business exposed to the networks of a small number of people.
There was no inbound pipeline to fall back on. Buyers researching colocation were finding competitors, not BE, and there was no mechanism to reach a specialist B2B audience that is small, high-value and almost impossible to target on social. The brief was to build a demand engine that produced qualified enquiries predictably, month after month.
What we did
In a category this specialised, the buyer tells you what they want the moment they type it. Paid search was the fastest route to qualified demand; organic was the route that keeps producing after the budget stops. We built both, in that order.
Paid search planned around buyer intent, not keyword volume. Campaigns were built to reach the specific searches a colocation buyer runs when they are evaluating providers — a small, expensive, high-intent set of terms where relevance matters far more than reach.
Qualification treated as the objective. In B2B infrastructure a lead count is meaningless; the sales cycle is long and the enquiry either fits the buying profile or wastes weeks. Campaigns were judged on enquiries worth pursuing rather than on volume or cost per lead.
Technical SEO foundations built from scratch. Site indexing, crawl and metadata structure were set up properly so the pages a buyer needs could actually be found — the unglamorous groundwork that has to exist before content or rankings mean anything.
Paid and organic run as one channel. Search query data from the paid account informed what the organic pages needed to answer, and organic visibility reduced how much of the category BE had to keep renting.
The outcome
Over six months the account produced 90+ qualified leads from paid search on 23.8K impressions — a small impression base by consumer standards, which is the point. In a category where the addressable audience is measured in hundreds rather than millions, the objective is to appear against the right search and almost nothing else.
The SEO work compounded alongside it. 43K+ organic impressions and 2,000 organic clicks in the same period gave BE a second source of enquiries that does not stop when a budget does.
The more durable change is structural. BE moved from a pipeline that depended on who its people happened to know to one that can be forecast, measured and adjusted — with two channels feeding it rather than one relationship at a time.
